CWS Kitchen Remodeling: The West Covina Owner’s Guide

We install and complete CWS-style kitchen remodeling work across West Covina every month, with most full kitchen projects landing between $14,000 and $45,000 depending on cabinet layout, countertop material, and how much plumbing or electrical needs to move. If you’ve got a CWS kitchen that’s showing its age, the failure usually isn’t one big dramatic moment. It’s the slow stuff: a drawer front that no longer sits flush, a cabinet box pulling away from the wall, a countertop seam that’s opened up, or a sink base that’s swollen from a slow drip you didn’t catch until the damage was done.

We’re an independent West Covina contractor, not affiliated with CWS. But we know how their kitchens are built, what holds up in Southern California heat and humidity, and what fails first after a decade or two of daily use.

Which CWS Models This Applies To

CWS kitchens typically came out of production lines that used framed cabinetry with either particleboard or plywood boxes, and the difference matters more than most homeowners realize. If your boxes are particleboard and they’ve been exposed to moisture, that’s a structural problem, not a cosmetic one. If they’re plywood, you’re usually looking at hinge, drawer glide, or door issues that can be swapped without tearing the kitchen apart.

To identify what you’ve got, pull a drawer and look at the side panel. Particleboard looks like compressed sawdust with an obvious glue line. Plywood shows actual wood grain layers. Also check the hinge stamps: many CWS lines used Grass or Blum hardware, both of which are still sold today and can be matched without replacing the door. The compatibility gotcha we see most in West Covina homes is with older CWS boxes that used non-standard hinge boring patterns. Measure the cup hole diameter before you buy anything: 35mm is modern standard, 26mm was common on older CWS lines and the hinges are not interchangeable. Get that wrong and your door hangs crooked no matter what you do.

Countertops on CWS installs were often post-formed laminate or solid surface. If it’s solid surface and the seam is splitting, that’s repairable in most cases. If it’s laminate that’s delaminating at the edges, replacement is the honest answer.

Signs Your CWS Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Doors no longer close flush or sag visibly. This is usually worn hinge springs or loosened mounting screws. On framed CWS cabinets, the fix is often as simple as new hinges and a longer screw into the face frame, but ignore it long enough and the door’s weight starts stressing the hinge plate and cracking the frame stile.
  • Drawers stick, bind, or come off the track. Undermount glides wear out, especially on heavy pot-and-pan drawers. The CWS units built with side-mount epoxy-coated slides last longer, but when they go, the drawer grabs and jerks instead of sliding. Replacement glides run better than new and cost far less than new boxes.
  • A cabinet box pulls away from the wall or drops at the corner. This is a mounting failure, sometimes from the original install, sometimes from house settling. West Covina sits in a seismic zone and older homes move. If you see light between the cabinet back and the wall, or a corner dropping, the box needs to be re-secured before it separates entirely.
  • Swollen or darkened panels under the sink or at the toe kick. Water is getting somewhere it shouldn’t. By the time you see it, the particleboard has already absorbed enough moisture to lose structural integrity. The leak has to be fixed first, then the affected panels replaced.
  • Countertop seams opening or lifting at the edges. Heat cycles in a West Covina summer expand and contract laminate and solid surface. A seam that’s opened more than a hairline gap can let water into the substrate, and that turns a hundred-dollar repair into a multi-thousand-dollar replacement.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A walk-in pantry with wood shelving

Full CWS-style kitchen remodeling in West Covina runs $14,000 to $45,000. That covers tear-out of the existing kitchen, new cabinet boxes and doors (or refacing if your boxes are structurally sound), countertops from Cambria, Caesarstone, or Silestone, sink and faucet, backsplash, and the plumbing and electrical work needed to bring everything up to current code. Smaller kitchens with no layout changes start around $9,000. A cabinet-only install runs $4,000 to $13,000. Countertops alone: $2,000 to $6,500. Backsplash: $800 to $2,500. Kitchen island: $3,000 to $10,000.

What moves the number is whether you’re changing the footprint. Moving a sink or range means opening walls, re-running plumbing, pulling permits, and bringing the electrical up to code. That’s real work and real cost. Keeping the footprint and swapping surfaces in place keeps the project faster and cheaper.

Every estimate is a written, line-item quote before any work starts. The number you approve is the number you pay. And the 365-Day Done Right Promise applies to every CWS kitchen job we take on: if something we installed isn’t right within a year, we come back and make it right, in writing.

DIY or Call Us?

What an owner can safely handle: adjusting soft-close hinges with a screwdriver, tightening loose handle screws, replacing drawer glides that are surface-mounted, and touching up minor laminate edge chips with a repair kit. Those are low-risk Saturday jobs.

What goes wrong fast: pulling countertops off cabinets without knowing how the backsplash is attached, attempting to reface doors without a clamping setup (you’ll get lipping and gaps), and any plumbing or electrical work behind the cabinets. Water and wiring behind a kitchen are not the place to learn on the job. We’ve fixed more than a few DIY attempts in West Covina that cost double what calling us first would have. If you’re unsure, call (341) 217-4204 and we’ll tell you straight whether it’s something you can handle or something we should.
