James Hardie Driveway & Pavers: The West Covina Owner’s Guide
If your James Hardie exterior is tied into a driveway or paver system that’s failing, we stock and install the matching transition parts, edge trims, and paver substrates in West Covina for $7,000 – $18,000 on a full paver driveway installation, with smaller repairs starting around $250. Most owners discover the problem the same way: a paver edge against a James Hardie foundation line starts sinking, or the driveway settles and pulls a Hardie trim piece out of true. We carry the Hardie-compatible flashing, drip edges, and paver restraint systems on the truck so we can usually address it in one visit.
Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

James Hardie doesn’t make pavers themselves, but their siding lines (HardiePlank, HardiePanel, HardieTrim) meet driveway and walkway surfaces at the foundation and grade line, and that’s where the trouble starts. If your West Covina home has HardieTrim boards or HardiePanel skirt boards running down to a paver or concrete driveway, the part you’re usually replacing is the trim-to-grade transition: the flashing, the drip cap, or the foam backer rod that separates Hardie fiber cement from ground-contact moisture.
The key gotcha: James Hardie requires a 6-inch minimum clearance between the bottom edge of any fiber cement board and finished grade, pavement, or paver surface. Many West Covina driveways were poured or re-paved after the siding went up, which eats into that clearance. When the gap closes, water wicks up the board and the bottom 2 – 3 inches start to swell and delaminate. That’s the #1 failure we see near the South Hills neighborhoods where driveways got repaved on top of older slabs.
Aftermarket flashing products work fine for most repairs, but the James Hardie factory trim boards and their specified fastening pattern matter if the board itself is failing. We match the original profile exactly: the reveal, the shiplap joint, and the factory paint line, so you’re not left with a mismatched seam running across the front of your house.

Signs Your James Hardie Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- The bottom edge of the Hardie board is dark, swollen, or flaking. Water is wicking up from the driveway or paver seam. Fiber cement absorbs moisture at cut edges, and once it swells past 6%, the board starts delaminating. The flashing detail against the pavement has failed.
- Paver edges along the foundation are sinking or pulling away. The paver restraint edge (usually plastic or aluminum) against the house has lost tension or the base has eroded out from under it. The gap lets water pool right at the Hardie trim line.
- The drip cap or z-flashing above the driveway line is pulling free. This metal piece is what stops running water from ever reaching the board bottom. When it shifts or corrodes, you’ll see rust streaks or a visible daylight gap between flashing and board.
- The bottom Hardie board is cracked or snapping at the paver course. Pavers don’t expand and contract much, but the base underneath them does. If the driveway pressure pushes against the board, the fiber cement can fracture along the fastener line or at the ground cut.
- The gap between pavement and siding is inconsistent. If one corner of the driveway reads 6 inches of clearance and another reads 2, the pavement has shifted. That pressure transfer to the Hardie trim is never going to stop until the driveway edge is restrained or re-graded.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Full paver driveway installation in West Covina runs $7,000 – $18,000 depending on square footage, base condition, and the paver product you choose. If the paver system is solid and the failure is isolated to the James Hardie trim-to-grade transition, you’re usually looking at $250 – $700 for flashing replacement, backer rod, caulk joint repair, and paint matching. Driveway sealing runs $250 – $700, and a full driveway replacement (concrete or pavers, with proper base) lands between $5,000 and $14,000.
The price includes demolition of the failed section, new base material if needed, the pavers or transition pieces, flashing and trim where it meets the Hardie siding, and cleanup. We put every number in writing before work starts, so the estimate you approve is the price you pay. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the parts and labor on the repair for a full year.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check the gap between your Hardie board and the driveway surface with a tape measure. If it’s under 6 inches, that’s your problem and it’s worth documenting with photos before you call anyone. You can also check for soft spots in the paver base by walking the edge and feeling for deflection. What you shouldn’t do is pull the bottom Hardie board off yourself. Once that board comes off, you have exposed sheathing, potential termite entry, and a water gap that will eat your sill plate. And if the pavers are holding back a slope or retaining wall edge, the cut and re-set gets dangerous fast.
We’d rather walk the driveway with you than watch a homeowner spend a weekend on a repair that fails the next winter. Call (341) 217-4204 for a free estimate and we’ll tell you straight what needs replacing and what doesn’t.
FAQs

In West Covina’s climate, a properly installed transition with 6-inch clearance and intact flashing lasts 15 – 20 years before the paver base starts moving or the caulk joint opens up. What shortens that dramatically is irrigation overspray against the Hardie board, or a driveway that was repaved and lost its clearance. We see premature failures at 5 – 7 years when the gap got closed.
Yes, if the paver base is still sound and the movement is limited to the edge course. We re-set the edge pavers, replace the paver restraint, install new backer rod and sealant at the Hardie transition, and match the paint. If the base has failed under multiple courses or the driveway slope has shifted, a section replacement or full re-pour is usually the honest call. Call (341) 217-4204 and we’ll tell you which one you have.
A trim-to-grade flashing and paver edge repair is a one-day job in most West Covina homes. A full paver driveway with proper base preparation runs 3 – 5 days depending on square footage and access. We give you a written schedule before work starts, and if anything changes, you hear it from us first, not from a voicemail.
We carry the standard HardieTrim profiles, flashing, backer rod, and caulk colors that match the most common West Covina installs, plus edge restraints in both aluminum and plastic. If you have a custom color or an older profile that’s been discontinued, we source it through our James Hardie supply channel and it’s typically on-site within a week. We’re an independent contractor, not affiliated with James Hardie, but we’ve been installing their product lines for years.
